This Month’s #WCW is Crystal Mouton of I am Royalty. I interviewed Crystal a few months ago and I am so excited to share her as my #WCW. Crystal and I attended high school together but our interactions with one another grew stronger over the past year or so. She was a vendor at my First Annual Sip and Shop and has supported other events throughout the year. Crystal is such an amazing and resilient woman. She carries herself with so much style and grace, her brand name is so perfect for what she truly represents. She exudes nothing but positive energy. I truly look up to her in this aspect. Please enjoy my interview with her.
So Crystal, may you give me a few details about yourself?
My name is Crystal Mouton and I am a 29-year-old women striving to make a difference in the lives of others, especially young girls and women. I was born in Houston, TX but I’ve lived in Louisiana, Georgia, and Florida. I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and will shortly be pursuing a Masters in Counseling to assist troubled teen girls and help build healthy families in the community. I’m the founder and executive director of I Am Royalty, a Houston based organization dedicated to promoting self-worth and empowerment among young women. I’m currently an elementary teacher and a Paparazzi consultant with a jewelry business named Styles of Royalty. I love all things classy, chic, bold and bling! I also enjoy getting into my flow by decorating, organizing and being creative.
Tell me more about I am Royalty & Styles of Royalty and what it means to you?
I am Royalty is an organization for young women ages 11-18, dedicated to promoting self-worth and empowerment. I Am Royalty aims to help young women improve their lives by building healthy self-esteem, developing positive values, and cultivating skills that will prepare them to be successful leaders in today’s world.
Styles of Royalty is a jewelry business I started last year that styles and serves women with fierce $5 jewelry without breaking the bank.
What inspired you to start I am Royalty & Styles of Royalty?
I decided to start the organization, I Am Royalty, because when I was 15 years old a women spoke into my life and told me that I would inspire young girls and women and that they would look to me for guidance and advice. I was given the scripture Proverbs 31:10 and have remembered it ever since. Another reason why I decided to start this organization was that I know what it feels like to lack confidence and to struggle as a young woman in a world that’s constantly telling you that you’re uniqueness and beauty isn’t good enough. I know what it feels like to try to live up to the standards of society only to constantly strive towards unrealistic expectations. I want girls and women to walk in and embrace their God-given abilities, talents, and beauty.
I decided to become a Paparazzi Consultant and start my jewelry business, Styles of Royalty, because I wanted to have a side hustle that would allow me to make more money, have fun and meet women from various walks of life. I am now able to assist in funding my organization I Am Royalty and fund other ventures.
Did you face any adversities growing up, or even in your adulthood? If so, tell us about them and how you overcame them?
I grew up as a perfectionist, made good grades, the right decisions, etc., but there was still a void in my life. I didn’t really have many friends growing up and many times I was the peculiar one, even in my family. I was missing something but had no clue what it was. I married my high school sweetheart at the age of 19, thinking that it would help fill the void I had experienced for so long. Many of my needs were supplied but it still wasn’t enough. 6 years later our relationship ended in a divorce due to unrealistic expectations in the relationship, brokenness and me struggling to really love and find myself at such a young age, while trying to be everything to someone else. I had no clue what I was doing, all I knew was that I wanted things to be different from what I saw and experienced growing up. I wasn’t whole as an individual and I was trying to cover my own fears and insecurities and try to change someone else not realizing that I was the one who needed to change. It wasn’t until I truly came to know who I was in Christ that I became confident as the woman I am today. I also had to heal and am healing from those things that broke me over the years, including unrealistic expectations. I learned that another person, marriage, money or anything else in this life won’t make you whole. Only truly knowing your Maker and believing the things He said about you are true and walking in your purpose completes you. This experience has really shaped me to be who I am today and to push me to inspire girls and women to heal and become the best versions of themselves. We may not always understand why we go through what we do but it all has a purpose and gives not only your life meaning but others as well.
What are your short term and long term goals?
A short term goal of mine is to make I Am Royalty a nonprofit organization and to go back to school to receive a Masters in Counseling so that I can further help and heal young women and encourage them to be the best version of themselves.
A long term goal of mine is to own my own private practice to be able to help build a healthy community and expand I Am Royalty beyond the Houston area.
What is your personal preference? Working a 9-5 or being an entrepreneur?
At this point in my life, I prefer both a 9-5 and entrepreneur life. I’m working my 9-5 as well as my jewelry business, Styles of Royalty, to fund the entrepreneur life I desire. My goal is to own my own businesses and be free to do the things I love to do and fulfill my life’s purpose!
What have you accomplished so far that you are most proud of? What do you think you can work on more?
One thing I’ve accomplished so far that I’m proud of is that I went through college and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. No one in my immediate family went to college and graduated so I became known as a first-generation college student. It took me about 6 years for various reasons but I wanted my family as well as others to know that anything’s possible if you put in the necessary time and work. It doesn’t matter how long it takes as long as to reach your goal! Your dreams and life purpose matter and if college is the route, that’s perfectly fine. I learned so many things during my college tenure that will have a major impact on the lives of others as I seek to be the change I want to see.
What are some tips or advice you could share with anyone who may want to follow the same career path as you?
Some tips or advice I would give would be to do amble research on exactly what it is you want to do to avoid wasting time and money. Work on your craft every day. Make sure you have your vision and end goal in mind at all times because life can get rough. Stay focused. Stay the course. Don’t allow fear to hold you back, there are beautiful opportunities on the other side. Also, get around like-minded individuals that can encourage you, uplift you and genuinely support you.
