My February WCW is, Brittani Halliburton-Armstrong of SASSY Women’s Network, based out of Houston, Texas. I met Brittani a little over a year ago through a mutual friend. I was in the beginning stages of planning my first event (Goal Diggers Brunch) and our mutual friend suggested that I have her as a Guest Speaker. After getting to know Brittani, I couldn’t have agreed any more. She impacted my first event tremendously, and I am so grateful she accepted to be a Guest Speaker. She shared her story of how she became an attorney and how she started her organization. Since then we have collaborated with various projects, which will be released soon!
Brittani is an inspiration to me and is someone I look up to. She is an author of “Window Seat“, a successful Attorney and has her Women’s Empowerment Organization. Her organization holds several types of events throughout the year empowering young women. My goal is for my brand to be as tremendous as hers is. Her dedication to our women in our society is exactly where I would like to take my brand. Brittani is definitely an amazing Woman, and you can definitely tell this is her passion. Her passion has turned into something great which makes her a force to be reckoned with.
So Brittani, tell me about yourself.
I am originally from Houston, TX, but I grew up in Southern Louisiana. I am a giver at heart, an attorney by trade, and author and motivational speaker by passion. I graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL) with my B.A. in Public Relations and a minor in communications. Following my 2011 graduation from ULL, I moved to Houston for a marketing job. In 2013 I decided to follow my dream of becoming an attorney and enrolled in law school at Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law. I graduated from Thurgood in 2016 and become a licensed attorney in November of 2016. I am a member of the Texas State Bar, an active member of the Mu Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., and creator of the SASSY Women’s Network (Sisters. Applauding. Sisters. Success) an up and coming women’s empowerment organization in the greater Houston area. At SASSY we focus on educating, empowering and encouraging women through seminars, networking events, community service and much more. My latest and most recent venture was the release of my first book Window Seat that focuses on not comparing your journey. It covers transitional phases in life and how to remain positive during the highs and lows of your life journey. It includes short chapters, 365 words of affirmation and weekly words with short summaries for encouragement.
Tell me more about your organization, Sassy Women’s Network.
SASSY Women’s Network (Sisters. Applauding. Sisters. Success) an up and coming women’s empowerment organization in the greater Houston area. At SASSY we focus on educating, empowering and encouraging women through seminars, networking events, community service and much more. Currently, we are seeking SASSY ambassadors to grow our network and broaden our reach. We aspire to create a culture where women can thrive and grow without the pressures of competition and jealousy. We are all beautiful, talented and amazing and SASSY is here to spread that message and ask that all women get on board.
What made you create your organization, Sassy Women’s Network?
The nation’s climate is why I started SASSY. Women all over the nation have started to stand up and show the world what we are made of as women and I decided that I no longer wanted to take a back seat and wait for a big break but I wanted to create my own break and hopefully in creating such a break I would create the openings and breaks for other BOMB.com women.
Did you face any adversities growing up, or even in your adulthood? If so, tell us about them and how you overcame them?
As a child, I grew up in a single-parent home. A lot of people consider that to be adversity, but I found it to be an amazing journey that allowed me to have a relationship with my mother that I cherish and respect. (I personally don’t find it to be much of adversity, because unfortunately its how a lot of people in my generation were raised so it was more common than not). I believe it made me the strong, independent, caring and awesome person that I am. As an adult, I faced relationship woes that had it not been for the grace of God could have resulted in me losing my life. I overcame these things by not allowing them to define me. But instead, I found strength in my weakness and activated my faith. Prayer has been my right hand and most times my left too.
What are your short term and long term goals?
Short term- As I mentioned above by trade I am an attorney. Currently, I specialize in business law and NFL disability with experience in personal injury. I have been presented with the opportunity to provide legal counsel for a Houston based film series that will be launching in the near future so it is my short-term goal to thrive in business law and grow in the legal profession by securing more creative clientele. Another short-term goal is to complete my second book before June 2019 which it is underway and for my last short-term goal I would love to expand SASSY’s network and social media followers. As for long-term goals the major goal is for SASSY to be a household brand that host seminars, conferences, retreats and networking events all across the nation.
Being an entrepreneur has its ups and downs, do you prefer a “9-5,” Entrepreneur life, or Both?
Can I have like a 10-3 lol and entrepreneur life? I enjoy structure but I also enjoy flexibility, and being a boss offers both to an extent. But as an entrepreneur, you have to be prepared for the unexpectant and understand that you will face highs and lows and there may never be any form of consistency.
Entrepreneurship takes a great deal of hard work and passion. What have you accomplished so far that you are most proud of? What is something you could work on more?
I am most proud of my book Window Seat. I was very nervous about releasing it and I actually withheld the book from the public for about 5 months before I decided to leap and release it. Window Seat is very special to me because it started out as my personal journal and just myself talking to God and encouraging myself through life’s phases and to now receive feedback that the book made people cry, or it has them thinking about life, and how it has inspired them means so much to me. It has inspired me to keep going and not put down the pen no matter how long it may take for me to be on a big stage in front of a world audience.
What are some tips or advice you could share with anyone who may want to follow the same career path as you?
Tips and advice I would share would be 1. Keep talking to yourself. I know people say that’s a sign of craziness but it is not. It means you self-aware, you believe in you and that with the love and help of yourself you can get through anything. Always be willing to bet on yourself. 2. Support others even when it looks like they aren’t supporting you. God sits high and looks low those efforts never go unnoticed and its all about sowing seeds. 3. Stay organized, write your vision down and trust the process.
