Frugal Fun Living

When the new year rolls around, it’s always a fresh start to do something you’ve never done before. Or something you have always wanted to do! Why not make this a year we turn around those financial woe’s. I can attest to being down to my last because I’ve been there before. I have been late on rent, my lights have been off, having no gas to get to my destination, gone without eating just so my daughter could, and so much more. This post isn’t about that, this post is how I was able to slowly get out of that black hole of financial woe’s. I’m not where I want to be financially, but I’m doing better than I was 4-5 years ago. I had to give up things I like, to do things I love. I’ll be sharing tips to increase your savings, no matter the salary/income you may be bringing in. This post is to share tips and encourage you to still live your life but on a budget. There is nothing wrong with being on a budget, it has an greater outcome in the end.

Tips for saving and maximizing your savings:

  • Write down your monthly bills for the year and their due dates
  • Write down your financial goals
  • Find an accountability partner
  • Pay down credit cards and line of credits
  • Never miss a payment
  • Don’t use credit if you don’t have cash
  • Cut off your cable & get Hulu and/or Netflix
  • Pick up a side hustle (a LEGIT one)
  • Sign up for clubs to earn savings when you spend, only use them when your budget allows (Click here for more details)
  • Download apps to your favorite places to earn points when you shop
  • Use coupons when shopping (but don’t use this as an excuse to shop)
  • Skip sales, just because it is on sale does not mean you need it
  • Go grocery shopping and cook more
  • When grocery shopping always have a list
  • Pack your lunch for work
  • Don’t go grocery shopping while you’re hungry
  • Save loose change
  • Stop impulse shopping
  • Sell old items (eBay, Poshmark, Amazon, Craigslist, Once upon a child, Plato’s Closet, etc.)
  • Build an emergency fund
  • Cancel any memberships you are not using
  • Set up a budget and follow it
  • When at restaurants, skip getting drinks and ask for water instead
  • Buy in bulk
  • Use cash-back programs to increase savings while shopping
  • Cancel your gym membership and work out at home
  • Avoid overdraft fees
  • Only use your banks atm (if you have to use another bank, you don’t need the cash that bad, avoid the fees!)
  • Plan in advance!

These are things I have done over the past few years to maximize my savings. Below I am sharing “savings challenges,” to help those who need help with budgeting and saving.
